The Chisholm Trail ran to the east between Fort Worth and Dallas. Fort Worth became a supply hub for provisions as cattle drivers headed north. The Fort Worth Stockyards became a hub again as cattle drives turned to the railroad in the late 1800s and early 1900s. With population and housing growing from 27,000 in 1900 to 105,000 by 1920 there was steady demand for additional homes.

John married a local Judge's daughter, Elizabeth Willing in 1890.
