Weatherford Homes in the Early Days
Weatherford is the county seat of Parker County. Located just 30 miles west of Fort Worth at the junction of Highway 180 and 80, historic Weatherford provides a stark contrast to Fort Worth’s bustling metropolis. Weatherford was founded in 1856, incorporated in 1858, and named for Jefferson Weatherford, who co-authored the bill forming Parker County. The courthouse was built shortly thereafter. Weatherford now has a population of approximately 19,000 residents (according to the 2000 census) spread among its 24 square miles.
Weatherford Famous Residents
Weatherford hosts a number of events. It is home to a farmer’s market, known as First Monday, held the Friday, Saturday and Sunday preceding the first Monday of every month. It also hosts the Parker County peach festival the second Saturday of June, and Weatherford boast to be the ”Peach Capital of Texas”. Weatherford is home to Weatherford College, the longest continuing community college in Texas. Notable Weatherford residents include Mary Martin and son Larry Hagman, as well as portrait artist Douglas Chandor, whose subjects included Queen Elizabeth II, Winston Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt. Weatherford is also known for its shopping on historic Courthouse square. Mr. Chandor later in life retired to Weatherford with his wife, a Weatherford native, and built Chandor Gardens.
Historic Weatherford
While Weatherford’s Courthouse square is a historic site to behold, it is far from the only jewel in Weatherford’s treasure trove. Historic sites here also include the Weatherford Cemetery, Weatherford College and more than sixty homes on the historic register.
